Our trip to Verbicaro
by Dennis Fazzio

We arrived in Verbicaro to cold and rainy weather after several days in Firenze with sun and 28 degree C temperatures.  There were wedding party remnants outside of Trattoria Vincenzo and a band standing by in front of San Giuseppe’s Chiesa (church).  I began taking casual photos expecting a wedding party or a statue for a holy day procession to appear out of the church, only to behold a beautifully inlaid wood casket being bathed by the rain.  We moved on to talk with Vincenzo to find out if he was going to be open on Sunday, since the wedding party had been his Saturday focus.  He was and we setup to see him and his family to dine midday on Sunday.  From this point we hiked up the hill to Via Croce to see if we could better locate the house where our grandfather, Angiolo Maria Fazio, was born in 1879.

We found Via Croce easily, having been there in 2005 and also a lovely lady who was curious about our quest.  She helped us find the three doors that were where he could have been born.  No numbers were on the houses in the 1800’s.  It is also noteworthy that the new residents have built on top of these original “concrete caves”, and so these older residences were not so obvious on our first visit.  This having been attended to we proceed back down the hill and found Sergio on his way to reopen Oreficeria Fazio after siesta time.  He recognized me from our visit in 2005 and remembered my friends who bought much Verbicaro gold from him.  We were lucky enough to meet his dad this time, who was repairing watches upstairs in a very cool room and who insisted that with a name like Dennis that I could not be Italian.  Elizabeth shopped for a while and came home with two pairs of handmade white gold earrings….dad paid since her 21st  birthday was just the day before.
