Portugal, Spain, and Morocco

Here are some pictures from our tour of Portugal, Southern Spain, and Morocco.

 
   
 
 
Lisbon's Monument to the Discoverers sits by the  River Tagus in Lisbon and memorializes the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator.The tower of Belem, completed in 1521, was built as a fortress in the middle of the Tagus River. It served as the traditional starting point for Portuguese navigators who set out to discover new lands. 
 
 
Lisbon's Old Town is a neighborhood built on a hillside overlooking the harbor. Try to visit it in the early morning.

  Begun in 1747 by the Dom Pedro III on the foundations of a former country mansion of the Marquises of Castelo Rodrigo, Queluz became the summer palace of the Royal Family.
 
 
The Palace of Sintra was the summer residence of the kings of Portugal.
 
 

Cascais is an international seaside resort, close to Lisbon. These are the typical boats of the Portuguese fishermen.

 

 

 

 

Below, Obidos is Portugal's best preserved walled village. 

 
 
 
 
 

Fatima is a village in the center of Portugal about 70 miles north of Lisbon. It was there in 1915 that three peasant children began having a series of apparitions of angels and, later, the Virgin Mary. Below, Albufeira. One of Europe's most popular vacation sites, the Algarve is south of Lisbon. We were there on a perfect day. 

 
 
 
  Below, Avila, Spain. At 3,710 ft above sea level, Avila de los Caballeros is the highest provincial capital in Spain. Avila is said to have the best preserved medieval walls in Europe. 
 
 
 
 
Salamanca, Spain. The university city of Salamanca is Spain's best showcase of Renaissance architecture.
 
 
  The Plaza Mayor was completed in 1755. It was once used for bullfights, but now is a place to stroll and shop.
 
  The city of Toledo is sited on a hill above the Tagus River. The city has been inhabited since Roman times.
 
 
  Below, Cordoba's great mosque dates back 12 centuries. More than 850 columns of granite, jaspar, and marble support the roof. Many of the columns were taken from Roman and Visigothic buildings. During the 16th century, a cathedral was built in the heart of the mosque.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Below, One of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain, the Alhambra Palace overlooks the city of Granada.
 
 
 
 
Below, Mijas is a small town that sits high above the Costa del Sol. Donkey's serve as taxis there.

Below left, this building in Seville was built for a world's fair. Some trivia...Many scenes for the great film "Lawrence of Arabia" were filmed here. The building doubled for British Headquarters in Cairo. Be sure to see a flamenco show if you go to Seville.

 
 
 
Seville Cathedral is the third largest cathedral in Europe. It houses the controversial tomb of Columbus. The cathedral in Santo Domingo also claims that he is buried there. However, recent DNA testing suggests that the remains in his Seville tomb are authentic.
 
 
  This is the view of the Straits of Gibraltar from Morocco. The large outcropping is one of the Pillars of Hercules. The other Pillar, is the Rock of Gibraltar, which is the mountain that you see in the far background of the photo.
 
  Tangier was a fun overnight experience. We stayed at the El Minzah Hotel which is in the heart of the city. It is perfectly maintained and has very good Security. Below is a picture of the lobby. My wife, Roberta is at the front desk.
 
 

Left, is is a view of Tangier as we were leaving on the Ferry.

 

 

 

Below, the Rock of Gibraltar and St. Michael's Cave, which is located about halfway up the Rock.
