Day 7

On our last day in Holland, we left the ship at 8:00 a.m. for our trip to Keukenhof Gardens. Along the way, we passed many tulip fields in full bloom.

We spent the morning in Keukenhof Gardens, which was, by far, the highlight of our trip.

Take my advice... If your're planning a trip to Holland in the Spring, plan to spend some time in these spectacular gardens.

Originally part of a 15th century castle, the grounds were used as an herb and vegetable garden. The name "Keukenhof" means "Kitchen Garden."

The park was developed in 1840, and flower gardens were started in 1949. The mayor of Lisse, and the local bulb growers and exporters came up with the idea of an open-air flower exhibition, so that they could show the wide range of flower bulbs available for sale. Almost all of the flowers in the pictures are different varieties of tulips.

These just might be the most beautiful gardens in the world. One thing is for sure, both Roberta and I have never been to more beautiful gardens, and we've been to many.

By noon, the gardens started to get very crowded and it was time for us to leave. We were awestruck by the beauty of Kuekenhoff, and we hope to return soon.

We ate lunch on the ship, then walked around downtown Amsterdam. It was Queen's day, which is one of the biggest holidays in The Netherlands. Over one million people crowd the streets of Amsterdam to celebrate. Rock concerts, street parties, and sidewalk sales are around every corner. Everybody wears orange because the Queen is a member of the House of Orange-Nassau. It was very crowded, and most of the downtown streets were closed to automobile traffic.

They even have parties on small boats while cruising on the canals. It as about 2:00 pm. when we walked through downtown, and lots of people were already drunk or high. After about an hour, we were ready to go back to the ship to pack for our trip home.

Day 8

Below, the final two pictures of our trip... Roberta with our luggage, and The River Empress in Amsterdam. We left for the airport early in the morning for our eleven-hour flight to Los Angeles.

We can't say enough good things about this trip. The River Empress and Uniworld Staff were fantastic. We had a great vacation.

We hope you enjoyed our pictures. It's a pleasure to share them with you!

Technical notes:

My pictures were taken with a Canon 20D digital camera. I used three Canon lenses during the trip; the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, and the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS. A few pictures in this travelogue were taken with a very small Canon SD100 digital camera. This was my first trip without a film camera.

I use Photoshop CS2 to process my pictures, and I use Dreamweaver 8 and Flash 8 for my web site.

Over one thousand people from all over the world visit my web site every day.
